Update management service at 100% CPu after patching to 4.1.0 build 345043

Hello,

Recently patched our Windows 2008R2 server that hosts vSphere Server with the above patch.

After that, the Update management service starts a java process that runs at 100% CPU, and wont

let up.

Rebooting server or Restarting service makes no apparent difference.

Also, killing java.exe only makes it reappear after a couple of seconds.

Memorywise it looks correct.

Any clues on where to start looking for what it is trying to do ?

File included is from procmon, which says that result of java-call is NAME NOT FOUND

I could not find a way to cut'n paste, so text file included instead.

Tommy

moving Update Manager 4.1 database

We have Update Manager 4.1 in a vSphere 4.1 environment.  We are moving our Update Manager database to a new sql host.  Is there any documentation out on moving the databse and what you have to do on the host with Update Manager installed (our vCenter server) to reconfigure it to use the moved database?  I looked in the KB and didn't find any information.  There is a kb on moving the vCenter db which I'll be doing, but nothing specific to Update Manager.

When scanning a cluster, a few of the hosts in the cluster fail to scan with the following error:

VMware vSphere Update manager had an unknown error. Check the events and log files for details.

     Task: Scan entity

     Scanning object esx.domain.com

     Could not scan esx.domain.com

Any ideas?

Update Manager on the VMware host being updated

$

I have two VMware hosts with vCenterServer running in a vm on one of the hosts.  Update Manager is loaded and works fine.

I would like to update (install patches) the host that has VCenterServer on it.  Tech support said that they could not tell me that it was OK to do a staged update with UpdateManager on the host.  My plan was to push the updates out, then use vSphere client to manually reboot the host that is home to the VCenterServer.  It makes sense that this would work, but the tech told me to create a second vCenterServer on the other host.  That is a lot of work.

Has anyone successfully done what I was planning to do?  Watching UpdateManager patch the first host, it appears that Update Manager pushes the updates to the host, then goes into maintenance mode, and reboots.  Why not push the updates, then manually reboot?

Any other suggestions or ways to do this from the console?

UM doesn't seem to be working

All my ESX hosts are showing as compliant but only 1 patch is listed as installed (ESXi510-20121040-BG).

All other patches listed are displaying ‘Not Applicable’. This includes any ESXi510 updates which were released after the above patch – so I would have expected these to show up as needing to be installed, but they don’t.

My baselines are configured correctly – one that picks up all critical patches and another picks up all non-critical patches.

I know I can install these at the CLI (and grab them all with the patch release ESXi510-201212001) but wouldn’t mind finding out if there is something wrong with UM if anyone has any suggestions?

Thanks

Steve

Updating the vCenter/Update manager VM

Hi,

This may be an obvious question/answer but i cant seen to find an answer.  If i picked the wrong forum area, please tell me where it should be asked.

I have a vCenter server (v5.1) and Update Manager (v5.1) running as a VM on one of my hosts.

I have just finished reinstalling my 3 hosts (going from v4.1 to v5.1, upgrading wasn't an option due to OEM drivers).

All VMs are now running the up-to-date tools

I now want to upgrade the VM Hardware to Match Host (going from v7 to v9) for the vCenter server (I have already done it for my other servers).

When i try to remediate it i recive the error "VM vCenter2 has either VMware vSphere Update Manager or VMware vCenter Server installed. This VM will be ignored for scan and remediation".

Is there a way to upgrade this VM?

Thanks for any help / ideas

1 VUM and 2 VC

Hi All

Appologies if this has been asked previously

I have a fully functioning VUM already within a VC environment but I want to add another seperate VC environment.

The new VC Environment needs to be patched to the exact same spec as the first one so I wanted to know if I could use a single VUM instance to patch both environments??

I have done a bit of reading on this and cant see that I can but time is short and I dont have forever to look into this.

Has anyone else done this?

If so how did you do it?

Thanks

Discovering Virtual Appliances - Can I disable

$

Hello,

Upgraded to vCenter 5.0 today, installed UM.  It is running tasks to Discovery my virtual appliances and hanging on one particular Virtual Appliance that I am running.

Is there a way that I can disable this Discovery of Virtual Appliances?  I only want to use VUM to remediate hosts.

Exclude a virtual appliance from VUM

I have a single virtual appliance that I want excluded from being scanned by VUM. Everytime its scanned VUM states "cannot discover virtual appliance "server name". I cannot seem to locate a way to remove a single VM from the VUM baselines that are used for the entire Datacenter but I assume there must be a setting. Help?

HP & Fujitsu ESXi image patches

Since we run HP and Fujitsu servers as ESXi 5.1x hosts I can't use the VMware provided patches. I always get the message that these can't be downloaded from the patch source. That was working with the VMware ESXi image. Are there repositories or ways where or how I can get patches for these branded images?

BTW, greetings to the mods! I hope you're all well. Maybe I find the time to join again in the future.

Update Manager Query

Hello,

I am new to Update Manager and have few questions. I am using vCenter 5.1.

1. If I "Configuration Tab" of update Manager and under download settings, I click download now.  Where are these new updates stored?

2. If I create a new dynamic Host Patch baseline, in criteria section of the wizard, under product, it only shows me EmbeddedEsx 4.0.0, EmbeddedEsx

4.1.0, EmbeddedEsx 5.0.0, EmbeddedEsx 5.1.0, esx 4.0.0 & esx 4.1.0. It does not show ESXi 5.1? (Check Attachment)

Thanks,

Check Notification cannot be completed

We're running VUM 5.1.013071 on W2008R2 VM and vCenter Appliance 5.1.0.5100. Time to time I see a lot of queued "Check new notification" tasks. I must restart VMware vSphere Update Manager Service and enable VUM Extension plug-in. I can see "VMware vCenter Update Manager has restarted. The task was scheduled to run when Update Manager was not available and will run on the next scheduled time." errorr messages then.

I was able to "manually" download patches and upgrades before I've restarted VUM service. I've generated Update Manager log bundle before and after restart if it could help.

Thanks for an advice

Any need for 2 Update Manager databases?

Hey guys,

We have a 4.1 farm, a 5.0 farm, and a 5.1 farm.  We are currently running Update manager on the vCenter server for the 5.0 farm.  We just built a new 5.1 farm and I noticed that the update manager on the 5.0 farm does not show any 5.1 patches.  I need to make sure to not cause any issues on the 4.1 and 5.0 farms, but I was thinking the best method to get everything sorted would be to upgrade Update Manager on the 5.0 farm to 5.1.  Then point the servers in the 5.1 farm back to the Update Manager in the 5.0 farm.  Is there any know issues with doing this?  I do not want to accidently start updating hosts in the other farms, etc. but I think I would have to Upload an ESXi image and remediate before anything bad would happen.  Are there any other settings I should check to make sure upgrading the Update Manager 5.0->5.1 will not cause any issues?  I know I should make a database backup as well.

Thanks,

Dan

Upgrade host where vCenter is installed

Hi,

I have 3 hosts managed by vCenter. I have vCenter installed on one of the hosts so I can't upgrade that one. I don't have vMotion as it is an Essentials license so I can't move it to another host temporarily. Is there a way to upgrade the vCenters host without manually copy the VM over to another host and start it up there and upgrade the host and then copy it back over manually!?

Can't update VUM - Incompatible version error

$

Hello,

My vCenter is version 5.0.0, running on Windows 2008 Server R2. I recently upgraded my vCenter from 4.1, and am trying to update VUM so that I can patch my hosts. I have downloaded and tried every version of the VIM ISO that I can find:

4.0.0

4.1.0

5.0.0

5.1.0

And no matter which of the installers I use, I get the error message "the vcenter server is incompatible with the vmware update manager". If none of those versions are the correct one, which one do I need to update VUM on vCenter 5.0.0? And why aren't updated releases backwards compatible?

Very frustrating - any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Unknown Compliance for VM with FT enabled

$

Hello,

I have a quick question regarding Update Manager and VMs with Fault Tolerance enabled.

As part of the upgrade to 5.1 I have attached a baseline to upgrade all VMs' hardware and VM tools to the match hosts.

I have remediated VMs, and all of them were upgraded/updated no problem except 1.

The VM in question has the FT enabled and shows up in the Update Manager under VM/VA Compliance as Unknown.

On the other hand if i go to the VM and select Update Manager tab, it shows as Compliant.

Now I'm left with cluster being 99% compliant

How would I fix that?

Any pointers appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris
