Upgrade from 4.0 to 5.0 issues.

Upgrading vCenter 4.0 on Win2003 to 5.0, Win2008R2 using the VMware vSphere 5.0 Upgrade method described by the pdf document.

I have the 2003 machine off, I did the backup.bat file and then the install.bat file. It installed vCenter Server and some other functions.

I am running the install.bat again and it is trying to install vSphere.  I get the vSphere Update manager, it looks for vCenter Server locations and credentials.

I have confirmed the http port number but I get the vCenter Server entered is not readable error message.

I did the SQL studio manager, and confirmed the port number, I have message that it did install vCenter, but I dont see it running as a service.

what else can I try?

From my Googling there seems to be multiple causes for this error during Update Manager install, but none of the ones I've found seem to apply to my situation. I'm trying to install UM 5.5 u2 on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard thats been fully patched, with a remote SQL Server 2012 SP1 server (another instance on same server is SP2 but I dont think that matters) using a 32bit DSN. I've seen the issue about 32+ character passwords causing this, and that's certainly not my case. Though I have tried simpifying it since nothing else has worked. I'm using a SQL server user & SQL authentication (though my vCenter server uses Windows authentication with its DB), I've even given that user full admin privs in SQL server & to the msdb & UM databases explicitly. I'm currently using this in evaluation mode as I'm evaluating vSphere and this isn't leaving a good impression so far. I havn't tried using the included SQL express as I've got a real SQL server thats maintained so I shouldn't need to. Is there something else I'm missing?

VUM Shared Repository

Here is the environment I am presented:

3 vCenter Servers running  5.5 Update 2 (2 VCSA 1 Windows install)

3 VUM instances

No access to the Internet. Patches have to be downloaded on a separate PC and imported manually. Is there a way to import the patches to one instances of VUM and have the repository replicate to the other instances of VUM?

Hello!

I cannot enable vCenter Update Manager plugin in vSphere Client. It shows to download and install but never enable after install. It's working in vSphere Web Client (Scan).

Software:

vSphere Client 5.5

vSphere Update Manager 5.5 Update 2

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.0.20100 Build 2170515 with VMware vSphere Data Protection 5.8

Any idea how to resolve this problem?

Thank You in Advance,

UMDS 5.5 and SQL Express support

$

I'm looking for an official statement/documentation about support for SQL Express for the UMDS in vSphere 5.5.

According to the Update Manager documentation a maximum of 5 hosts and 50 VM's is supported with the SQL Express edition. Although I think that from a technical point of view, this limitation is a relict from older versions, and should be reviewed, I can live with it. However, I rather don't want to purchase another SQL Server license just for the Update Manager Service (UMDS) - which runs in a DMZ - if this isn't really required. The documentation only says "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express instance (for small scale deployments)". However, I don't actually understand why/how the size of the environment is related to UMDS, and it seems like overkill to me to have a full blown SQL database to just maintain a list of patches.

I have to plan and setup a fully supported environment, so it's important to have official statements/documentation.

Migrated Update Manager DB and reinstalled plugin only half works

$

Decided to migrate my update manager db today to a sql server we have virtualized.  Everything went fairly smooth.  I needed to reinstall the plugin due to a new certificate being implemented so after doing all that and getting everything reconnected the plugin loaded fine.

When i go to scan if I leave "patches and extensions" and "upgrades" checked the plugin breaks and I have to wait a bit and reenable it.  If I just scan for "patches and extensions" it works fine and if I just scan for "upgrades" it breaks.

My SQL DBA says that I'm only hitting one database and no other connections are trying to be made but maybe we missed something?

Has anyone had an issue like this before?

Thanks,

Staged Updates-- where are they located on the ESXi host v5.5

Hi--

I have a particularly troublesome update that my VM host says is unneeded when I try to load it (using ESXCLI), but that is marked as necessary after scans, and gets staged on the VMhost.

I know that I can eliminate the issue by removing the update from the baseline, but I'd like to investigate further.

I'd like to look at what is getting staged-- and would also just like to know where things go when they get staged.

Thanks in advance.

Patching ESXi5.5

Hi All,

This is my first time posting so please let me know if I am doing this wrong.

How would I go about patching ESXi5.5 hosts using the Web Client? I can scan/attach patches and I have migrated VM’s. Also, I have entered into maintenance mode. Just don’t know what my next move should be.

Any help would be appreciated!

very interesting problem on VUM caue esxi host HA

Hello all guys,

I encountered a very interesting problem here ,I should let u all know , to see if you can help investigate ,

I was upgrade Esxi host from 5.1 U1 to 5.1 U2 build 174xxx .

I attached baseline group to cluster .(20 more hosts).

then scan whole cluster while all cluster were running well .

I found it's was quite slow while scanning . so , I canceled scanning .

now I got some tasks on vsphere client.

1. scanning  cluster ....cancelling..

2. cancel scanning  ....xx% ,

3.host 01xx upgraded complete .

to see event of host 01xx, I saw a vm on this host was restarted on other host by HA, also have a HA event.

this happened on 3 hosts , and 4 vms were restarted by HA , so I disable HA immediately , then nothing happened.

I want to know , if scan and cancel scan can cause host HA ?

AND WHY THIS HAPPENED.?

Scan should be a very safe action.  why it caused VM restarted.

VMware support can't give me a suitable reason.

my cluster enabled HA, admission control , DRS , but no vm monitoring ..

Did anyone of you encounter this ? I need to know WHY!

Update manager shows ESXi host non-compliant if upgraded but not if ESXi image was installed from scratch

So, we upgraded hosts from Dell image of 5.5.0 to 5.5.0U1 using Update manager to remediate.  After upgrade, it shows non-compliant.  Another host which had ESXi installed from scratch with the same ISO image (Not through update manger) shows compliant.  When I compare the VIB versions of the two hosts, I see the following differences.

Cannot Create ramdisk error during Upgrade (Scratchconfig isnt working?)

$

I am trying to use Update Manager to upgrade ESXi 5.1 to ESXi5.5. I am getting the error "Cannot create a ramdisk of the size 333mb to store the upgrade image."

The ESXi has plenty of disk/ram left.

I have researched and found an issue where the scratchconfig was pointing at a non-existent device. I set the scratchconfig and rebooted.

After the reboot in the new folder I did see the various var, core, logs etc folders, however  I still get this Cannot create ramdisk error when trying to upgrade.

I tried from various articles /vmfs/volumes/datastore uuid/.locker-host and /vmfs/volumes/datastore uuid/scratch, both with the same result.

I confirmed I can write in these new folders.

Everytime the log still says  ERROR', test 'SPACE_AVAIL_ISO', expected '349773754', found '0' despite the scracthconfig.

What I am doing wrong?

Hi,

I am having issues installing new patches via update manager, what I am trying to do is to get USB3 working by installing the October patch and I thought this would be simple via update manager.

I have run the Start which runs without issue and when I run the Remediate it gets to about 95% and fails with the error below

Update Manager 5.1 to 5.5 update. DB needs to be backed up but Management Studio won't install?

Anyone have any ideas why SQL Server Management Studio won't install on a VUM running on Windows 2008 Server?

I get an error indicating that SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 or greater need to be applied first.

When I attempt to install any SP (SP3, SP4), I get the error:   The Instance ID is required or missing.

The database version is:  10.51.2500.0

Searched a lot but no luck so far.

Or any other suggestions how to backup the database.

Thx,

Hello,

after a fresh installation of VUM 5.5.0u1a with SQL embedded connected to a vCenter server Appliance same version, I can't see any VUM events in the admin view with the error "Failed to retrieve data" as you can see in the screenshot below.

Everything else is working properly (patch, download, scan, remediate, etc.)

Any idea ?

Hi All,

i have the following issue on Update Manager 5.5 Update2b installed on Win2012R2.

The Extension plugin is not present only from vSphere Web Client (from plugin tab is not present).

From vSphere Client i can install and use correctly the plugin an the Update Manager.

The service start correctly and the path is standard during installation.

I have tried to reinstall it but issue is the same.

Any idea for fix this issue, or similar case?

Thanks and regards

Remediate Host Fails

Recently upgraded to 5.5 Update 2. Upgraded update manager now when trying to patch the hosts it fails with the error:

"VMware vsphere update manager had an unknown error. Check the events and log files for details."

This happens more or less straight away after clicking remediate. I don't seem to be able to find any log related to it nor is there anything useful in events tab.

Any ideas?
