Cannot download software packages from patch source

vCenter 5 / vUM 5

ESXi 5

Error msg in vCenter console when trying to Stage patches or Patch a server:

"Cannot download software packages from patch source.  Check the events and the Update Manager log for download details"

This is a new setup, so this is the first time trying.

I have 3 baselines:

Critical Host

Non-Critical Host

HP Baseline

I DO NOT get the error when I stage or patch Just the Critical Host baseline.

I get the error when trying to stage the Non-Critical or HP patches.

And I can remediate the non-critical (maybe this is an order of execution issue .. remediate critical first...?)

But I get the same error if I try to stage or remediate the HP patches.

VUM did successfully connect and download the patches from the websites.  I can see the files and metadata on the vUM server.

It seems the error refers to moving the patches from vUM server to the host.

I looked at the logs, but I don't see anything apparent.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Trying to create a baseline in vsphere5 i have no version 5 patches or upgrades.  Just updated datacenter to version 5 recently and now need to patch and/or upgrade to 5.1.  When i create a baseline I see no patches at all for version 5.  No updates at all in the list.  Connection seems to be on and no errors.  Am I doing something wrong on an I just missing something?

Trying to use Functional account to startup VMware Update Manager 5.0

I'm trying to use a Functional account to startup VMware Update Manager 5.0 with external SQL database.

When I try to start up Update Manager Service with this new account I get the following error:

  Services

Windows could not start the VMware vSphere Update Manager Service service on Local Computer.

    Error 5: Access is denied.

There is not an Update Manager log.

What are the privileges required for this account so it will work?

Anyone done this and have some hints, tips, etc?

HW and SW requirements

What are the HW and SW requirements for a vCenter server to manage a small infrastructure (less than 5 hosts with less than 100 VM)?

The server must act either as vCenter and Update Manager for vSphere 5.x.

I read the KB on page http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2005084, but I am looking for information to configure the disks (minimum size, RAID level, and so on).

Using Update Manager to Upgrade ESXi 5.0 to 5.1

We have newer HP servers and in order to install ESXi 5.0 we had to use the HP OEM branded install disc.  We installed Update Manager for the first time after 5.0.  I read there is an update zip file to do an upgrade.  Will I need to find the HP OEM branded upgrade zip file?

Update manager tab suddenly disappeared

Hi,

I've got a strange issue with the upsate manager plug in. The update manager tab suddenly disappeared. The plug in is still installed but i've got an error (see file below) telling me that the port 443 of my server did not answer.

Problem is the port semms to be opened and update manager service is active on the server. i don(t know where to search to solve that error.

Any help would be appreciated.

My system : server windows 2008 R2 with an oracle database and the client runs on a win 7 64 bits.

thanx in advance

It took so long for the vsphere to connect to connect to my vmware server

i'm getting this error

However, I can connect properly to the server through Putty SSH when I login my root user. but I need to set up the IP of windows through console in VMware vSphere thats why I want to use this client.

Starting updating hosts

I apologize for the very basic questions.

I need to start updating ESXi 5.x hosts in a vSphere 5.x environment.

Update manager was installed when the infrastructure was mplemented but up to now it was used only to download patches, not to apply them.

  • I plan to start applying patches to hosts, but I need to protect each host as they are used in production.
    • How can I protect each host from possible problems (i.e. a patch causes an unexpected problem and the host does not restart?)
    • Can I backup the host or at least save the host configuration in order to restore it in a very short time if anything goes wrong during update?
  • Given my hosts are all 5.x, how can I avoid downloading patches related to ESX or ESXi 4.x?
  • At the moment I need to apply urgently only a limited number of patches: how can I check if they depend on other patches or can be simply installed?

Cant update from VUM 4.1 U1 to 4.1 U2

Greetings,

I am attempting to update my VUM from 4.1 Update 1 to 4.1 Update 2 but currently I am not seeing the Download and Update option in the Plug-in Manager. Is there a way to either manually install this update or force the Plug-in Manager to see that Update 2 is available? Thanks.

Cannot Install Update Manager 5.1

I'm trying to upgrade my VUM from version 5 to 5.1 but i'm getting stuck at the point in the installer where you enter the credentials for the vCenter server, the installer hangs at this point and vpxd.exe and java.exe hit high CPU usage.

Digging through the logs it gets stuck running the vciinstallutils.exe vcversion check, running this manually give this output which rapidly repeats over and over again. Other plugins such as Remote Deploy and the ESXi Dump Collector register and install without issue.

Different users all give the same result, upgrade installation and fresh install also gives the same result.

I can't find any information relating to this issue and I can't see anything in the vCenter or SSO logs that would indicate a problem. I've never had a problem with VUM from version 4 onwards so i'm a little shocked as to the issues i've recently had with vCenter 5.1 as a whole.

Anyone able to help?

I have checked all firewall ports and 9084,8084,80,443 are all open on both the vsphere and esxi servers. vci-integrity,xml shows the correct address (as you can see from the esxupdate.log file).  I've swapped between dns and ip address so the issue is not the fqdn.  Any further suggestions. EVERY update of vsphere appears to cause the problem so I have completely rebuilt the server from scratch and I am at my whits end.

vSphere 5 Update Manager installation ERROR 25085

Spent hours to fight with Update Manager installation error 25085 "Setup failed to register VMware vSphere Update Manager extension to VMware vCenter Server...).

Found an answer in  KB Article: 1014119

This issue occurs if the credentials specified for the following contain a semicolon:
  • vCenter Server authentication

  • Update Manager database authentication

To resolve this issue, remove the semicolon and retry the installation.

Wow. I would expect to see this in the installation guide :-)

We used a password with a semicolon.

So, if you are installing Update Manager 4.X/5.0 make sure that password doesn't include a semicolon.

VMware Update Manager 5.0.11856  on Windows 2008 (64bit) trying to use an external Oracle Database (version 11.2.0.3).  We use the 64-bit ODBC driver to make the connection to this database for vCenter.   We are not able to have the 32-bit ODBC driver on the same server.  Anyone else have such an issue, if so how did you resolve?

Thanks!

Updating only part of the members of a cluster (possible HA issues)

Given a vSphere 5.x cluster, can I update only part of the members, see if there is any problerm, and then update all the remaining members of the cluster?

In other words, can I use a cluster with some members updated and other members still to update?

Can a similar scenario cause problems in case of failure of a node and compromise HA (high availability)?

UMDS system requirements (and more)

$

Hi everybody, I’ve got some questions according the UMDS (5.1) and UM (5.0, 5.1).

I’d like to know about the UMDS system requirements as the official documentation is not very informative about that.
I assume that I need a Windows Server 2k8 (R2) with sth. like 1 vCPU and 4GB vRAM.
What about the Database? Is it ok to use the MS SQL Express provided with the installer or do I need a full MSSQL-DB? ---> What is a „small scale deployment“ mentioned in the documentation?
How much diskspace do I need for the DB and the patches? Can I use the values provided by the UM sizing estimator?

As we'd like to offer the patches by http to the UM, I’d like the UMDS to download the patches into the folder inetpub\wwwroot directly. Is this possible or do I have to download the patches to an other folder first and then export the patches into the inetpub\wwwroot? (I don't want to waste so much diskspace...)

As we don't have ESX(i)3.x/4.x-Hosts, I don't want to download these patches, if possible. How can I do that? Is this set of commands correct?

vmware-umds -S --enable-host --enable-va
vmware-umds -S -d esx-3.5.0 embeddedEsx-3.5.0
vmware-umds -S -d esx-4.0.0 embeddedEsx-4.0.0

What about new ESXi-Images? Can I download/provide them with UMDS to the UM or do I still have to upload these images to the UM manually from my desktop?

Thanks a lot in advance for your answers!

UMDS 5.1 broken (download/export fails on clean install)

When I do a defaults clean install of UMDS 5.1 on a VM, and try to run -D (download) and then -E (export), the process fails with this error:

-3.0.1.vib does not exist.
I even changed the download settings to only include ESXi 5.0 and 5.1 patches, but I still get this error.
I also created a new VM, and reinstalled everything with defaults, same error. I basically cannot create a repository because these two files do not exist at the URL for download. This causes the download to fail, and the export to fail as well.
How can I fix this? Has anyone else had the same problem?

Update Manager not downloading all files?

$

Hi,

My UMDS is configured as follows:

vmware-umds -S --disable-host --disable-va

vmware-umds -S -e embeddedEsx-5.0.0 embeddedEsx-5.1.0

vmware-umds -D

So I expect to only get host updates for ESXi 5.x.

In the umds\hostupdate\vmw directory, I only have these files:

__hostupdate20-consolidated-metadata-index__.xml

vmw-ESX-4.1.0-notification.zip

vmw-ESXi-4.1.0-notification.zip

vmw-ESXi-5.0.0-metadata.zip

vmw-ESXi-5.0.0-notification.zip

vmw-ESXi-5.1.0-notification.zip

4 Questions:

1)  Why is it downloading 4.x files?

2)  The files are being exported into shared repository.  However other UM clients are looking for a file called vmw-ESXi-5.1.0-metadata.zip, which does not exist, which makes the patch update fail in vCenter ("Cannot download patch definitions").  Is this file supposed to exist?

3)  Does your vmw directory have this file?

4)  When I run vmware-umds -D, I see a bunch of errors where there are timeouts downloading certain files, is this normal?

Thanks!!!  Any help is appreciated.

New to using Update Manager. Can one update manager serve two sites?

We have two sites, PA and NY, connected via NAN. vcenters are in linked-mode. One Vcenter Update Manager installed in NY. Plug-in installed but no Update Manager tab for PA machines. Do I need to install a separate Update Manager in PA?
