Best practice on applying patches

$

0

Normally used to update standalone ESX's with esxcli and cummulative patches from VMware.

What is best practice when using Update manager? vCenter is 6.5.a and hosts are running ESXi 6.5.0 Build 4887370

If I want these to be patched to latest stable release (now and in the future) what will be the best approach on configuring the repository and applying baselines?

Regards, Lars.

Update Manager Missing

I have installed Update Manager on the same server as my VCenter server. Seems to have installed fine. Service is running. Problem is when I log into web client, it is not under Monitoring. Plug-in also isn't showing under plug-ins. I have tried re-registering it with the utility....nothing. Anyone know what I am missing here? Thanks.

Update Manager Snapshots of Domain Controllers

Hi All,

It is my understanding that domain controllers should not be snapshotted. It looks like Update Manager, but default snapshots a VM before remediation. Am I correct in assuming that I should disable this since I only have DCs on my host? Thanks.

For the love of all that his Holy. DO NOT LOAD PATCH 6.0U3A! Unless of course you want your vcenter to stop working.

I spent 3 days on the phone with Tech support and i have yet to figure out what they did to fix the problem. I let them control

and I never heard a word while they were working. It's up but I cannot run a patch update until I know the shit will work!

COME ON VmWare!!!

Dell PowerEdge R715 - ESXi 6.5 Upgrade Incompatible

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to upgrade ESXi 6.0 to ESXi 6.5 on Dell R715 using Dell Customized image, but it showing Incompatible as there's conflicting VIBs which I'd need to remove first.

The upgrade contains the following set of conflicting VIBs:

Micron_bootbank_scsi-mtip32xx-scsi_2.4.10-1OEM.500.0.0.472560

Brocade_bootbank_scsi-bfa_3.2.1.0-1OEM.500.0.0.472560

Brocade_bootbank_net-bna_3.2.0.0-1OEM.500.0.0.472560

VMware_bootbank_net-qlge_2.0.0.54-1vmw.500.0.0.472560

Brocade_bootbank_scsi-bfa_3.2.1.0-1OEM.500.0.0.472560

Micron_bootbank_scsi-mtip32xx-scsi_2.4.10-1OEM.500.0.0.472560

Is there a way to find out if there VIBs are in use before I remove them? NIC list command shows the below output.

Update ESXi 5.5 hosts automatically

I have ESXi 5.5 hosts that I would like to update with update manager using the schedule feature.  The issue I have is that we have appliances that run on every host (Trend & Zerto) that are not able to migrate.  The only options with update manager are to either migrate all the vms or power all of them off.  Does anyone know of a solution that we can patch\update our hosts with vms that cannot migrate without shutting off all the other vms on the hosts?

Hi,

I'm trying to patch an ESXi host with my Array Multi-pathing software via VUM on VCSA 6.5

I'm getting this error message

The host returns esxupdate error codes: 30. Check the Update Manager log files and esxupdate log files for more details.

The Update Manger Error Code KB doesn't list this error

VMware Update Manager/esxupdate error codes (1039063) | VMware KB

Has anyone come across it?

I'm having trouble getting Log Browser enable - once done I'll dig into the logs a bit more

Any help is appreciated

Cheers

Mike

Vmware 6 & Update Manager

Hi all,

I just deployed Update Manager for my Vmware 6 Vcenter server (build 2776510), enabled Update Manager client plug-in, but I still have no Stage or Remediate button in the right mouse button context menu (only Scan and Attach) in the web client.

So I thought to use the standalone client, but when I log in, there's a certificate alert that block everything and I can't go on.

This certificate alert is related to Update Manager :-(

How can I do? I can't access using standalone client anymore :-(

Vendor Customized ESXi Image and critical patching

$

Hello.

I would like some advice and guidance on the scenario below...

Scenario:

ESXi Vendor Customized Image installed on hosts

Updates to this customized image are released by the vendor on approx a 6 monthly basis

I would like to capture any critical patch releases by VMware and apply them immediately using vUM (not waiting for the Vendors release)

Question:

Can I apply the critical ESXi patch releases from VMware to the Vendor Customized install safely using vUM? I.E. The update will not over-right or delete any drivers installed by the vendor release?

My preference is to use vUM rather than a command line update if possible.

Thanks for your help!

While trying to scan a host (ESXi 6.0.0 Update 3 build-5050593) I got a rather cryptic failure message in vCenter (Version 6.0.0 Build 3617395):

Web searches don't reveal anything useful. I don't have AutoDeploy enabled/configured so PXE shouldn't be an issue. There are no firewalls between the hosts and vCenter/VUM. This is the first time using VUM on this instance of vCenter. A fresh reboot of the host didn't help.

Has anyone else encountered this or know what can be done to fix it?

Hi All, I am using Update Manager. There is a patch released on 7-27 for JRE update -

JRE 1.8.0_131 patch for vCenter Server 6.5. For more information, see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2150220

My update manager does not show this as needed. Do update manager not include these in its checks? Thanks.

VMware - Update Manager Not Showing Up In vCenter or vSphere Client

I setup a VM with VMware Update Manager from the 5.5 U3 vCenter download.  I'm running vCenter (Applicance) 5.5.0 build 4180647 (which should be vCenter 5.5 U3e).  I've tried installing the plug-in in the vSphere client (5.5.0 build 1993072 and build 4032365) and I click to install the plugin, it says 100% downloaded and then goes right back to being able to click to download again.  It never seems to install.  I've also logged into the vCenter web client and Update Manager isn't there either.

I ran the  VMwareUpdateManagerUtility.exe and re-registered with vCenter by name and by IP, but it still never shows up.

Clients I've tried are Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 and Update Manager is installed on Server 2012 R2.  Help please!

Updates VIB vs Update Manager

$

I found out something recently which I find peculiar.

Update manager is slow.

I am not talking about click click click, select, click click , then hit remediate vs a copy / paste command in shell window..

I am talking when you actually hit 'start', Update manager takes considerably longer.. like 45 minutes vs 10.

If I copy the *.vib to a local datastore then run the esxcli update command it is very quick (ESXi is only 350 Meg) then I reboot host, it reboots it comes up with proper build and that's it.

Update manager takes a long time there is a progress meter, then it takes a while to copy the files (it is equivalent to local storage) then it sits at 21% waiting for host to reboot, that takes a while.. this is AFTER maintenance mode is already set, so it's not waiting for a response from server to confirm VM's are stop, etc..

This is strictly the upgrade process, why is it so much longer via Upgrade manager for the same exactly ISO / VIB file?  Both are from VMware site, nothing special.. I assume ISO is the same as VIB for this part, but maybe not..

Still update manager takes a long time, not only that but if I ping a host to monitor progress it reboots .. twice before it finally comes up and shows done in vCenter console.. I find that odd as well.

VIB only restarts once and doesn't restart again.

I would think that given no special parameters in Update Manager it's just a straight up 'upgrade' no patching no other baselines JUST the upgrade, that's it.  Why is there a discrepancy in the amount of time, anyone else notice this?

Running latest Dell Customised 5.5 build but Update Manager saying missing patches?

Ain't ISO upgrades cumulative and include all previous patches?

Number of UM instances per UM service?

I have Vcenter 4.1 running Update Manager currently.  I also have a Vcenter Appliance running ESX1 5.5.

Is it possible to connect the ESXi environment to the current Update Manager instance in use?

I did see a similar post stating it is not possible, though I believe the person had 2 Vcenter servers.

Thanks in advance.

vSphere Update Manager and vCenter Server Appliance 5.5

Hi vSphere Community,

Can you run vSphere Update Manager (installed on Windows Server, with a separate MS SQL Server instance) when your vCenter Server is the vCenter Server Appliance?

Thanks in advance...

Running 5.5 U2e and VUM will no longer download software packages from patch source?

$

We had a vSphere 5.5 cluster configured for us by a 3rd-party through Dell as part of our purchase agreement. We are running vCenter Server 5.5 U2e on Windows 2012 R2 as a physical host. It does run Update Manager. In my most recent check today, Update Manager will scan a host and report patches that are needed. In this case we're at 5.5.0 Build 2456374 on our ESXi hosts. Update Manager detects 5 missing patches. After I put the host in maintenance mode, I remediate, select the patch group, and proceed through the screens. It starts its process and goes from 0% to 16% to 25% then sits there for about 1–3 minutes, then goes to 90%, 91%, and errors out saying:

"Cannot download software packages from patch source. Check the events and the Update Manager log for download details."

Multiple strange things:

  • This server was updating just fine a few months back when some previous patches were released.
  • It can see the internet just fine. No firewall issues.
  • Our failover site on the same network, but in a different location in the city is able to update just fine. Same hardware, network, and software versions.

Any ideas on where to look or what to try? I had gone ahead and update from vCenter Server 5.5 U2b to U2e (along with a VUM reinstall) hoping that would fix it, but it did not. Any help would be greatly appreciated, because we're not VMware experts and thought everything was set up correctly by the vendor. We were given a small amount of knowledge transfer, but nothing that would allow us to troubleshoot this.

The Update Manager config listed in vCenter Server points to just three sources, that look to be the default from hostupdate.vmware.com and vapp-updates.vmware.com. None of the settings have been changed from the initial install and configuration that were working at one point in the last few months (when I last patched the hosts to 2456374).

Looking through the vmware-vum-server-log4cpp.log I see these failures:

Any ideas? VUM throws a generic error.

VUM was upgraded from 5.5 to 6.0 after vCenter was. Would like to get hosts done this weekend.

Allowing Update Manager to reach vmware

Hi all, I have a vCenter 5.5 Update Manager which is unable to reach vmware.com

On the firewall we have allow the traffic to the below on port 80 & 443. So far we don't see any traffic blocked, except the connection attempt is incomplete

204.51.149.4

208.91.0.132

On telnet, we are able to successfully telnet most except vmware.com port 443.

I have log 3 cases with vmware support but till now they still insist that it's the firewall that's blocking. Both sites are not loading also on IE & Chrome.

The server's firewall is disabled and no settings on IE LAN settings.

We notice that xml.shavlik.com IP do change to 204.51.149.5, does anyone know the range IP for xml.shavlik.com ?

Please let me know if I miss out anything on troubleshooting
