Cannot remediate host because of HA

$

Hi,

Using vCenter 5.1 u1 and ESXi hosts 5.1 u1

I want to patch my ESXi hosts for the first time so it may be something in the setup but.... I would not know what. The whole setup was done by someone who has set up several 5.1 installations. **

I have a cluster of 3 hosts, I put one in maintenance mode. All VMs have been moved to the other 2 hosts and while the host went into maintenance mode the details column showed "Disabling vSphere HA on ...." So I assume that this host is no longer part of the HA machines in the cluster.

When I want to initiate the remediation of the host I get:

Cannot remediate host <name> because it is a part of a HA admission control enabled cluster

Which is funny as this host is no longer a member of the HA group in the cluster.

According to VMware KB: An ESX/ESXi host remediation fails with the error: No supported hosts found for remediate

I could simple disable HA on the cluster, remediate the host and then enable HA once more.

It is the only relevant KB article I could find but.... somehow that does not feel like it is the proper solution, nor does it feel like it describes my problem as I allready put the host in maintenance mode and HA should not be a problem any more.

Anyone know of a better solution before I try disabling HA on the cluster?

**  I may be a VCP 4.1 but there were too many changes for me from 4.1 to 5.1u1 to feel comfortable doing this myself. And I am glad I did it that way as even he ran into problems that were not covered yet in a KB because of the fact that we put the vCenter server on Windows 2012.

Update Manager - vCSA.

Little confused.  I'm running vCenter appliance 6.0 and deploying Update Manager .  After reading few blogs it talks about having two update manager servers. One for Download service and one for Update Manager server.

Can anyone clarify if I need two or one Windows box for update manager?

update manager ignoring exclusion

Recently tried patching some esi hosts on 5.5 update to with critical only patches.

After the patching the servers lost communication with vcentre (I discovered the reason vmware esi 5.5 complete update 3( kb/2110231) which removes support for ssl v3 ) even thou I only specified patches not updates!!!!.

So second time after rebuilding on 5.5 u2 I excluded this from the baseline and staged and re-mediated the host again (checking there was no mention of this when being shown what patches would be applied).

After the udate running vmware -l showed 5.5 u3 again?

Can anyone help with this?

THanks

Trying to use Functional account to startup VMware Update Manager 5.0

I'm trying to use a Functional account to startup VMware Update Manager 5.0 with external SQL database.

When I try to start up Update Manager Service with this new account I get the following error:

  Services

Windows could not start the VMware vSphere Update Manager Service service on Local Computer.

    Error 5: Access is denied.

There is not an Update Manager log.

What are the privileges required for this account so it will work?

Anyone done this and have some hints, tips, etc?

Update Manager with multiple vCenter Server instances

Just that really - if I have (for example) two vCenter Server instances, can they be managed by a single Update Manager server?

Just for some background - I'm looking at using the VCSA (appliance) to replace multiple Windows based vCenter Servers. The appliance will save on the cost of the MSSQL licenses but not if I need a MSSQL license for a Update Manager installation at each site. If that's the case I may as well just use the WIndows vCenter Server instance and configure Update Manager on the same box...

Appreciate any thoughts anyone has.

VUM 6.0 ignoring proxy settings.

Morning All,

Hoping someone can help with an issue I am experiencing with VUM 6.0 (Installed from the VMware-VIMSetup-all-6.0.0-3040890.iso image) - The problem in a nutshell is that for some reason it is completely ignoring the proxy settings and attempting to access the internet directly.

I have tried setting the proxy using both FQDN & the IP Address, neither seem to have any affect.

The log file shows:

[2015-10-22 09:43:57:738 'DownloadMgr' 2400 INFO]  [downloadMgr, 593] Executing download job {30749632}, url=https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml

However monitoring both the proxy & the firewall this never actually tries the proxy server it actually tries to get out to the web directly. I have confirmed that the VUM server can resolve the name correctly (however this wont matter when using the IP address), I have changed the service to use a domain admin account (even though it's a anonymous proxy - figured it might be worth trying).

Any advice or pointers would be great

Help: Update Manager 5.1 is not visible at Primary site!

Hi,

At our VMware environment, I have two sites - Primary and Secondary. When I was working to update the Host profiles, I logged into Update Manager. The moment I logged in, the Update Manager re-directed to Secondary site. I tried to dig into this and found that the Update Manager is installed at Secondary site server - not at the Primary. I want to know if I need to install Update Manager at the Primary site as well so as to work with Host profiles' upgrade.

Thanks

Hello,

I am relatively new to the vCenter system.  I haave an ESXi host and have installed the vCenter server and vSphere Client.  I am trying to install the vVenter Update Manager and it goes through mopst of the installation and when it appears to be almost 100% thropugh it comes up witht he following error:

Error 25012.Setup failed to configure Windows firewall

the only option is to click OK which then rolls back the installation.

When I first got the error I didn't even have Windows Firewall enabled, so I enabled it nd got the same error.  Then I went in and added a bunch of rules to open the prots it appears to need but still no luck.

Anyone seen this before and have any idea how to resolve it.

Thanks in advance for any assistance provided.

Hi,

I am having issues installing new patches via update manager, what I am trying to do is to get USB3 working by installing the October patch and I thought this would be simple via update manager.

I have run the Start which runs without issue and when I run the Remediate it gets to about 95% and fails with the error below

The host returns esxupdate error

the Update Manager log files and

Update manager 6.0 support with vmware vcenter 6.0 using Windows Server Failover Clustering

Hi,

I cannot find statement from VMware regarding Update Manager 6.0 support with vCenter 6.0 that installed with WSFC. Document that I have found discussing vCenter only but how about the Update Manger..is it supported also with WSFC ?

If it supported, should it is installed in the vCenter drive (the RDM disk) ?

If it not supported, how can I use Update Manager with vCenter with WSFC.

And another thing, I cannot find also about the database support with MS SQL 2014 always on Availabity Group. This MS SQL 2014 AG have shared nothing disk (can deployed without the RDM).

I am will use VMware vCenter 6.0 with MS SQL 2014 Standard AG.

Need inputs.

Thanks

Installing Update Manager 5.5.0b Cannot see the DataBase

Hi,

Due to issues I was unaware of, our previous Update Manager no longer worked. I did the foolish thing and uninstalled Update Manager in preperation of Installing the new version.

from what I have been able to deduce our Update Manager database is bundled togther with our vCenter Database and it is definatly a 32-bit database on a 64 bit system.

When it comes to installing Update Manager everything is fine untill I have to select the Database from the dropdown Menu its just not there. If i select Install a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express instance it states instance already exists do you want to overwrite.

Im fairly new to VMware and I have never done anything with SQL Server so any thoughts or ideas are more than welcome.

Thankyou in advance to anyone willing to help

VMware Update Manager Download Service question

We have installed and configured VMware Update Manager Download Service which work fine for downloading patches and extensions.  To this repo we have connected several vcenter servers.  vCenter and VUM/UMDS is all running version 6.

Now, I'm going to upgrade a lot of hosts from 5.5 to 6U1b or 6U2.  In that case I want to put the Dell Customized ISO/Offline bundle on the repo/UMDS server and create the baseline from that.  I can't find much informarmation about UMDS, and nothing about what I want to do.  So, does anyone know if it's possible, or is it only possible to import the ESXi image though VUM on each vcenter/vum instance ?

Can VUM Scan a host when a cluster is not healthy?

$

I have an 8 ESXi vmware cluster.  the 8th server is currently offline to vCenter because hostd will not stay started.  I have a case open with VMWare on this.  Because of this my VMWare cluster is not healthy.  That 8th server is on ESXi 6.0u2.  The 7th server is also on that version, but servers 1 through 6 are on 5.0 patch 12.  I wanted to scan server 6 so I could remediate and update its ESXi to 6.0u2, but the scan always fails.

I am wondering if this is because the cluster is not healthy and there is an HA issue?  I tried the scan in both the C# and the web client.  Both times I get "VMware vSphere UpdateManager had an unknown error.  Check the events and log files for details."

Where are the events and log files I can check?

Update Manager Base Line export and Import

Hi,

We are upgrading vSphere Infrastructure from 5.1 to 6.0, part of which we have fresh installed the 6.0 VUM and vCenters. But the issue is how do we take (export) all the existing baselines which are created in 5.x update manager. We followed below link however it is not working.

https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.update_manager.doc%2FGUID-FB9C8381-9D6C-4451-8CCF-99A14B552D59.html

Note: Customer has many custom baseline created for specific packages/plugins/software and want us to export those and import in new 6.x infra.

UMDS Infrastructure Best Practice

$

Hello everyone!

I am fairly new to VMWare and vSphere administration so I hope I didn't miss important things regarding my question. If so feel free to tell me.

So here is what I want to archive:

I want to setup the following enviroment (all hosts v6.x):

  • 1 Update Manager Download Services Server
  • 4 vCenter Servers with Update Manager
    • 1 vCenters will have more than 5 hosts and 50 VMs
    • 3 vCenters will have not more than 5 hosts and 50 VMs

The UMDS Server will have internet connection, the 4 vCenter servers won't. But they will be able to access a shared drive, where the UMDS Server should place the updates and patches.

The vCenter servers exist already and have Update Manager installed. I want to roll out the UMDS with a minimum of costs. The UMDS is not critical but would enhance our infrastructure.

To get me started I have some general questions:

  • Can I use one MSSQL Server 2012 with several instances for all the vCenters and UMDS?
  • Can I use MSSQL Express on the hosts, without using a dedicated MSSQL database, even on a vCenter with more than 5 hosts and 50 VMs?
  • Is there only a command line interface to work with UMDS?
  • Is there no built-in automation in UMDS? Like automatic patch download and export? Do I need to use Windows Scheduled Tasks or something similar?

My research so far:

UM & UMDS DBs on one host - possible? This question would help me move on but it has no answer yet.

Setting up UMDS for vSphere  This guide gives some details about  an offline setup but does not go into detail about the UMDS infrastructure.

Setting up Vmware Update Manager Download Service for Isolated Networks Pretty much the same scenario as the abouve post.

I will update this post as I aquire information to be always up to date and to have a How-To or something similar in the end.

Thanks for all your help and support!
