Can't update VUM - Incompatible version error

$

Hello,

My vCenter is version 5.0.0, running on Windows 2008 Server R2. I recently upgraded my vCenter from 4.1, and am trying to update VUM so that I can patch my hosts. I have downloaded and tried every version of the VIM ISO that I can find:

4.0.0

4.1.0

5.0.0

5.1.0

And no matter which of the installers I use, I get the error message "the vcenter server is incompatible with the vmware update manager". If none of those versions are the correct one, which one do I need to update VUM on vCenter 5.0.0? And why aren't updated releases backwards compatible?

Very frustrating - any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have 2 vcenters. one is on a primary site and the other is on a dr site. I have added the secondary site as linkd mode and now I can log into one vcenter and ee the other.

On the primary site, I hav update manager installed. Can I just use my primary side update manager to patch hosts on both vcenters?

I tried installed another update manager on the dr side but on the plug-in menu, I could only see one instance of update manager.

any idea what to do here?

Unknown Compliance for VM with FT enabled

Hello,

I have a quick question regarding Update Manager and VMs with Fault Tolerance enabled.

As part of the upgrade to 5.1 I have attached a baseline to upgrade all VMs' hardware and VM tools to the match hosts.

I have remediated VMs, and all of them were upgraded/updated no problem except 1.

The VM in question has the FT enabled and shows up in the Update Manager under VM/VA Compliance as Unknown.

On the other hand if i go to the VM and select Update Manager tab, it shows as Compliant.

Now I'm left with cluster being 99% compliant

How would I fix that?

Any pointers appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

URL for MS Security patch downloads in Update Manager

I'm trying to configure Update Manager in vSphere 4.1U1 to download MS Security Patches so that I can create a baseline to keep my templates up to date.  I went to the Windows Update site on my PC and copied that URL into Update Manager as a new Patch Source.   When I click "Validate URL", it errors out saying "Note Connected".  When I go back to the Configuration tab and click "test connection", the proxy configuration succeeds and connects to the Internet (rules out proxy or DNS issue).

The default patch source in UM for Windows patches is https://xml.shavlik.com/data.  That patch source is enabled and connected, but there are no Windows patches in the patch repository.

What is a known good URL that I can point Update Manager to so that I can have it download Microsoft Security Patches?

Update Manager does not offer esx-base Patches to be installed

Hi,

I have three Hosts, 2x 5.0.0.623860 and 1x 5.0.0.914586. Update Mager has a current repository with e.g.

ESXi500-201303101-SG, it is also in non-critical baseline and attached to the Datacenter. Although UM indicates that my Hosts are up to date.

Any suggestions?

Upgrading the VUM from 4.1 to 5.1

We recently upgraded out vCenter from 4.1 to 5.1 and now I would like to upgrade the VUM as well.  When I start the installer it starts there is a message that says "An earlier version of VMWare vSphere Update Manager is already installed on this system.  Click OK to upgrade to 5.1.0.13071"  After that it ask for vCenter log in information, so I input the new SSO credientials.  Following that is the problem.  It then says the "DSN is Vmware Update Manager and the place for hte ODBC Driver and says teh SQL server will use the logged on user credentials to verify authenticity".  And only has a next button and no fields to correct this information.  The error that it prints is:

"Setup failed to connect to the database.  Please make sure that you entered the correct Data Source Name, username and password."

First we use SQL authentication and I attempted to correct the ODBC Data Souce Administrator by adding that DSN and tying it to the database with SQL credientials, but I am not sure this is correct.

Any advice would be greatly welcomed,

Andy

UMDS download not including latest patches for ESX 3.5 released on 2/21/2013

Hello all,

I noticed that VMware recently released patches for ESX 3.5 on 2/21, so I went to my UMDS boy to pull them down for my repo (that I used to send offline updates) and it would not pull them down. There are no errors during the umds -D run.

Any ideas?

UM & UMDS DBs on one host - possible?

Hi all,

as we have more than one vsphere installation, I'd like to know if it is possible to put the umds database and the um databases one on host / mssql database.

What I'd like to do is:

- install a windows server with the UMDS and a MSSQL databse.

- install the UM on the vcenter servers and use the mssql of the umds server instead of the vcenters mssql server.

How to Control Downloads?

We have a new 5.1 farm with a new vCenter 5.1.  We installed the VUM and configured it per PDF we found off of VM's site.

Strangely, the new VUM downloaded all updates starting from ESX 4.0, to current.

We can easily delete the obsolete downloads from the repository. However, the Patch Repository still lists the old ones. We can set a filter to only show the correct ones, but I'd like to still delete the old updates from the Patch Repository view.

We stopped the service, deleted the old 4.0, 4.1 and 5.0 updates from disk, modified the XML file and restarted the service, but these old updates still appear in the view for Patch Repository.

We uninstalled VUM, deleted the DB and started from scratch. But in doing it again, we still don't see an option to say "only download applicable updates" or "only download 5.1".

Is there a way to control this behavior?

The other thing we thought was that we would just manually import the zip files but that seems like it goes against the point of an "update manager".

Has anyone else come across this?  I opened an incident with support but after 1 email stating "hmmm... not sure if that's possible, lemme get back to you", after 3 days, the support rep hasn't responded back.  It's more cosmetic than anything else, but not sure why I would get an Update Manager to list obsolete or not-applicable updates in my view.  I assume I am doing something wrong and that this can't be by design.

Thank you.

Update Manager - Error connecting to VMware vCenter Update Manager - Database temporarily unavailable or has network problems.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled, I've triple checked that I can log on to the VCenter server using the Update Manager account that is DB Owner on the Update Manager database. I can connect to SQL using the ODBC SQL 2008 native client under that same account. But we get the same error from multiple machines when we install and run the VCenter plugin.

Any Ideas?

Can't Update 5.1 SSL Certs

$

Alright, I need a quick sanity check.

After going through the steps in KB 2034833, I've managed to update all of my SSL certs for everything else without issue.  There were no errors in generating the requests, the certs themselves, and the actual process replacing them on the SSO, inventory service, vCenter Server, web client, log browser, and orchestrator.

When I get to Update Manager, I've used the automation tool as well as the manual process.  The correct certs are in the SSL directory, and there were not apparent errors when updating using both methods.  Yet, after restarting the service, I can open my vSphere client and still get warnings about the certificate from my update manager server.  Looking at the certificate, it appears to be a fresh SSL cert generated when the services were restarted.

I've searched high and low for any indication that there's a bug.  I can't seem to find a lot of data regarding this particular issue, save for 1 communities posting that was never answered.  Right now this is my only snag.  We have local risk requirements that state I have to change these certs to valid CA signed ones.  I would hate for us to have to uninstall update manager just because we can't get cleared for compliance.

Anyone have any insight?  Suffice it to say I've followed the KB where you use the utility / update the host DNS so that you can connect to a vCenter on a different VM, as well as the automation tool.  The certs are valid and I made sure they have the right flags.

Defining Baseline Groups

I have a number of sites managed by a single vCenter Server that have different requirements for how baselines are configured.  Within a given site all hosts need identical baselines.  How should I define my baseline groups to address this?  Should I create a baseline group for each type of baseline for each site?

Hi all,

I'm trying to get VMware Update Manager Client installed on my vSphere 5.0 server and it just won't show up.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing both the Update Manager Client and VI Client, no luck.  Image below shows the programs are installed and service running, but no plugins showing up.

Using default Update Manager Baselines

I'm looking to get an idea of when the default baselines that come with VUM are NOT sufficient.  Do the default "critical patches" and "non-critical patches" baselines work in most scenarios?  When would the makeup of these baselines need to be changed from the defaults?

Using UpdateMgr to update standalone ESXi with vCenter VM on it

$

Hi,

We have a standalone ESXi host running with a couple of VM's on it. One of these is running the vCenter.

Question is: Can I use Update Manager to update the host, when vCenter (and thereby Update Manager itself) is running as a VM on that same host? There no cluster, so nowhere to transfer the VM to. And since Update Manager starts by putting the host in maintenance mode my guess is this won't work. Question then is, is there another way? E.g. staging the host and somehow execute the staged updates after all the VM's (includning vCenter/UpMgr vm) have been shut down?

Imported patch show as compliant although there is an update available

$

Hi Community,

I have a problem regarding VUM and the Fujitsu CIM Provider. I can observe the behaviour on two seperate installations.

Environment:

  • vCenter & VUM 5.0U1
  • ESX 5.0U1/5.0U2

Steps to reproduce:

  • Install FTS server with custom image.
  • Load a newer version of the CIM Provider offline bundle into VUM using "Patch Repository" -> "Import Patches" and then add a dynamic/static patch/extension baseline and attach it to an ESX/Cluster.
  • Scan the entity and the baseline will show compliant, although there is a newer version within the patch repository and baseline (checked via esxcli).

Has anyone else observed this problem or found that one with another imported patch? Any ideas are highly welcome.

Thanks

Sascha
