Adding offline patches to repository (scripted)

  Hello,

I'm trying for quite a while to find a way to add offline patches (drivers etc.) to a VUM repository. Powershell doesn't have a commandlet. I found the command "vmware-vciCli.exe" in the VUM directory which has the option "--import-patch <arg>" but it only throws errormessages in vc and on the cli. I also found the document "Creating a vSphere Update Manager Depot" http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/vsphere-50-update-manager-depot.pdf but I can't find the tool "vibpublish" mentioned in the document. Has anyone any experience with this tool and knows where to find it?

Cheers

Update esxi-host without update manager: How to find dependencies or prerequisites?

$

Hey community!

I have to update some single esxi-hosts without vcenter Update manager using the following command:

esxcli software vib install -d /vmfs/volumes/[DataStore]/[Paket].zip

You can find updates on this portal:

Download</title> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;…

What I can't find are prerequisites or dependencies of these updates. Is the latest update always cumulative? Have I to install all updates step by step from older to newer? Some older updates have a bigger size than newer ones.

Thanks a lot!

Marcus

Update Manager - Hosts fails to open contents.xml.sig (Connection Refused)

Hello Everyone:

This subject looks to be touched on quite a bit, but I am still unable to resolve an issue I am having with one of my hosts.

When I attempt to remediate on one of my hosts it fails with "VMWare Update Manager had a failure"

I have a 4 host environment, at least one of the hosts is able to remediate. The host I am working cannot. I am using ESX 3.5.

I checked the esxupdate.log and see the following problem:

[13Jun11-1048] DEBUG: summary: /usr/sbin/esxupdate --HA --flushcache -d http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8080/vci/hostupdates/hostupdate/esx/esx-3.5.0 scan

[13Jun11-1048] DEBUG: root: Enabling hostagent interface

[13Jun11-1048] DEBUG: db: dbfile = [/etc/vmware/patchdb/patch.db], 5 keys

[13Jun11-1048]   DEBUG:     Depot: Download Rules: {'blacklist': ['*.rpm'], 'exclusives': []}

[13Jun11-1048] ERROR: root: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (111, 'Connection refused')>: http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8080/vci/hostupdates/hostupdate/esx/esx-3.5.0/contents.xml.sig

The IP address has been replaced with X's obviously.

I've checked the following article: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1004914

I am able to ping the IP, a temp directory is in place, and I opened the firewall for that port. I even went as far as opening the firewall completely for incoming and outgoing.

I am able to hit http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8080/vci/hostupdates/hostupdate/esx/esx-3.5.0/contents.xml.sig from other machines so I know it's visible.

I am not using a proxy.

I cannot determine why the connection is being refused. I've checked the vci-integrity.xml file and it looks ok.

Is this possibly a PGP problem or somesort of identity issue?

If there are additional logs I should check or anyone has any suggestions that would be greatly appreciated.

How do you update the vCenter Server?

I have a VM in my vSphere environment running Windows Server 2008 R2 that has update manager installed on it and is my vCenter Server installation also. After scanning it with Update Manager, it showed it needed to upgrade the VMware Tools to match the host and also needed to upgrade the VM hardware to also match the host. I upgraded the tools successfully, but when I tried to remediate the VM for the hardware, I got the following error:

"VM [VM Name] has either VMware vSphere Update Manager or VMware vCenter Server installed. This VM will be ignored for scan and remediation."

So how do I get around this since I'm using this VM to also patch/update the other hosts/VMs and it's my vCenter installation?

manually installing patches working but not showing up in patches repository

Dear community ,

I am trying to update my ESX1 5.1.0 build 799733 hosts with the list of patches below that I have freshly downloaded :

update-from-esxi5.1-5.1_update01

ESXi510-201305001

ESXi510-201210001

ESXi510-201212001

I have successfully installed my update manager plug in and I am able to manually import the zip files/patches within update manager .

When I am trying to create my baseline with the patches above , they are not showing up in the list and at the end of the manual import I have a message at the bottom of the window saying something like "0 content , 0 extension , 0 notification will be imported ....."

Any idea ?

ESXI version is 5.1.0 build 799733

Vcenter version is 5.1.0 880146

Update manager version is 5.0.0.8039

Thanks !!

Unable to download using vmware-umds

I have a number of ESXi 5.x hosts on an isolated network that requires me to use UMDS to download and export patches to enable Update Manager usage to said networks. I've been able to install UMDS on a Windows Server 2008R2 x64 box using the provided MS SQL 2008 Express. I should note that the server is in a high-lockdown state. The problem is that whenever I try to kick off the download, I get the following error:

[2003-06-24 08:31:52:255 '' 2516 ALERT] [logUtil, 265] Product = VMware Update Manager, Version = 5.1.0, Build = 1022478

Error open registry key (SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware Update Manager\DB, ret=5, err=0

I've verified that the registry key(s) exist and that all users have access to it. I've also verified that regedit is not restricted. Finally, I can't seem to find where any further log file information is stored, if any.

Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

I can't see any point or reason this is password protected. Does anyone at VMware know the password for the sheet so i can copy out my metrics??

Maintenance Mode Required to Scan?

$

Our best practice has always been to put hosts into maintenance mode first, and then scan for updates with Update Manager. We are looking at implementing scheduled scans, and the only thing stopping us is our practice of maintenance mode beforehand. Is this needed? Or are we safely able to scan production hosts with active VM's?

Update Manager Alarm actions

Hi,

I've been looking into Alarms in vCenter and in particular what Update Manager brings to the table. The documentation refers to the following functionality:

"Some notifications can trigger an alarm. By using the Alarm Settings wizard, you can specify automated actions to be taken when an alarm is triggered."

Any idea where you configure this and what actions are possible? Do you have to wait until an alarm is triggered first?

Thanks

VUM 5.1U1 Stuck Remediating 5.0 > 5.1 Upgrades

I will be opening a case, but I'm having an extremely annoying issue where the hosts now get stuck int he "Remediating" state despite the upgrade to 5.1 being completed. When this is happening, the host will keep connecting/disconnecting from vCenter until I cancel the remediation manually.. Additionally, this problem persists through even to the following patches that I am installing after the initial update.

Interested to see if anyone else is having this issue.

Please note that we are using an IBM ESXI 5.1 ISO so I can not add the vib.

what is the best way to update the hosts to ESXI 5.1 using the IBM image.

Hello,

We are using UMDS 5.1 and it downloads the update as seen in respective folders

but the update manager 5.1 repository on vCenter 5.1 does not show the latest updates related to ESXi510-201305001 even after clicking download now. (Validate URL is OK)

Any idea how to get the vCenter repository updated via UMDS ? Tried restarting update manager services

Thanks

Update Manager Service not starting on boot

My vCenter server has an issue in that the vSphere Update Manager service fails to start on boot, although it does start fine manually.

Everything looks normal, and have just reinstalled (updated) all of vCenter to 5.1u1a but that didn't solve the issue.

On boot, event logs show:

"A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the VMware vSphere Update Manager Service service to connect.", followed by "service did not respond to start request in a timely fashion".

The service is set to run as Local System Account, and set for automatic startup. Manually starting the service works fine.

There are also log entries a few minutes later:

"A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the VMware VirtualCenter Server service to connect." (however that service is running after boot)

"The VMware vSphere Profile-Driven Storage Service service terminated with service-specific error Incorrect function.."

The vCenter server itself is a physical machine (dual 2.8Ghz, 4Gb) running Server 2008R2 and only running vCenter.

Looked in the update manager logs and nothing.

Anyone have any thoughts on things to check?

Thanks,

Steve.

vCenter Update Manager 5.1 U1a fresh installation.

After replacing the default certs in vCenter with full certificates from an internal CA, I now receive the below error when attempting to view the Update Manager tab of the vCenter in question when viewing via the WebClient.

There was an error connecting to VMware vSphere Update Manager

UpdateManagerWebClient.PNG

Accessing Update Manager via the vSphere Client has no issues and can be managed successfully.

Any ideas?

Using update manager to update firmware

Is it possible to use update manager to update server firmware? For example, can you update HP blade server firmware by connecting to an HP repository, or by adding systems insight manager to the equation?
